Operahouse - Diane

The second single from the London based four piece, 'Diane' shows Operahouse know how to craft a fine pop song, but leaves the listener longing for something a bit more substantial. 'Diane' is an extremely catchy, well executed slice of indie pop but its real problem is that it seems a little too contrived. Guitars buzz and Johnny Lloyd's vocal performance is hugely indebted to Maccabees frontman Orlando Weeks, both in lyrical contact and delivery; mentions of "Little Miss Piggy" and "legs like matchsticks" particularly reminiscent of the Brighton band.

The verses benefit from some tight backing vocals and the chorus is full of indie rock energy, but these nice touches are in vain, as the lack of daring and originality shown by Operahouse is what fails to lift them above the numerous other bands ploughing a similar furrow in current musical landscape. B-side 'Padlocks On The Windows' offers more of the same and is not saved by myriad of pop culture references - name checking Ziggy Stardust and Andy Warhol is one thing, creating work as memorable as theirs is quite another.
