If ever there was a genre that sounds like a sweaty, sexy dance party in New York, then punk funk is it. Maybe LCD Soundsystem and DFA are to blame. Maybe not. Whatever, dEUS distill the essence of its tight guitar lines and bass rumble, and cut right to that bit of the brain that taps fingers, toes, and assorted other appendages in time to the propulsive beat.
'The Architect' witters on in choral chants about the titular designer who "is going to change the face of humankind", but the lyrics hardly matter. It's all about the beat, man. The interlocking tessellation of guitar riffs, and keyboard whorls makes a great track of what is essentially good pop music. All this punk funk and no cowbell. Sad emoticon face.
'Slow' acts much as its title would suggest, dropping the funk, mixing in some synth and piano lines that are clearly stolen from Joy Division. The morose lyrics and the downtempo guitars just make it a bit magnolia, a little sonic wallpaper. 'Slow' is more a b-side than half of a double-a, but 'The Architect' more than demonstrates dEUS's talent on the sports field of punk funk.
