Duels are back after their 2006 debut album 'The Bright Lights And What I Should Have Learned', and how things have changed. The first taster for second album 'The Barbarians Move In' shows a band who appear to have found their sound, and it's the more intense moments on the Britpop-infused debut that have been expanded on.
Unlike countless other groups who boast of new directions on their follow-up material that are hard to spot, Duels have quietly gone about and actually evolved. 'Regeneration' displays a darker, more ominous vibe, but with their former pop sensibilities most definitely still present (and welcome). The triumphant chorus and upbeat backing vocals ensure things don't get too gloomy, but there's an undercurrent of drama from being holed up in that north-east, windswept coastal studio that is threatening to explode. 'The Barbarians Move In' is going to be interesting.
