Cajun Dance Party - The Race

It would be somewhat of an understatement to say that The Kooks are often derided for their lack of spark, but this bunch of teenage upstarts could easily pass as stand-ins in the event of ill health, as telling the two vocalists apart is akin to discerning Roses from Quality Street.

After the intriguing simplicity of previous singles 'Amalyse' and 'The Next Untouchable', 'The Race' ups the production ante by adding glockenspiel and strings to the standard guitar and drums template - though it feels like lyrical ingenuity has been sacrificed at its expense. Throwaway lines like "the sun will rise, even if you don't happen to be there" are more 6th form poetry than Burt Bacharach and show little trace of their trademark humour and way with words.

Maybe 'The Jog' would be a more apt title as this latest offering does little to get the pulse racing. Back to the drawing board it seems.
