It's so difficult to listen to anything by Songdog without surrendering all empathy to Lyndon Morgans' earnest lyrics and harrowing insight. 'Pilgrim Hill' is no exception: rolling waves of sparse acoustic guitar and a steady beat that sounds like waves gently lapping against the shore set the scene for Morgans' lyrical recollection of a day spent drifting from one place to another.

The beautiful backdrop is almost a blank canvas for the singer, who is at his best picking out details that are illustrative, personal and often uncomfortable: "I saw two dead foxes by the hot dog stand, the sky's the colour of a milkshake and the hip flask in my hand ran out an hour ago." That does not detract from Woodward and Patterson though, and as ever their bare, yet rich, arrangements offer the most pleasant part of 'Pilgrim Hill' - a counterbalance to Morgans' bittersweet tale. Bittersweet is what Songdog does best though, and this is another gleaming nugget of folk noir from the Caerphilly trio.
