Ooh looksy here - sexy librarian chic from 2006. Someone's discovered electronics and synth noises. Thanks, Erol Alkan. The return single from the Sheffield sexpots (yes, because they have an attractive female singer, this automatically bestows 'sexpot' status on you, yes, more so because they're northern, and sexpot is like hotpot, but tastier) is a gentle shimmy into their new album.
Opening with "century" repeated in choral fashion, a gently grooving two decades old guitar line creeps in, like a neon lady with a perm locked in a cupboard for 25 years. After such an eased in beginning the sudden appearance of noise, bleeps, and glitches half way through is a little strange (and not in a good way).
A strange choice for first single, with many more obvious tracks present on new album 'Couples', 'Century' seems to be The Long Blondes' attempt to shout 'Hey guys, we've made progress'. Sadly, the progress seems to be towards tracks that, bar an electric interlude, float away whisper like on the gentle spring breeze.
