Nonsensical lyrics, stabbing percussion and a hefty dose of math-rock: exactly what we’ve come to expect from Foals. Bouncing off the ceilings like an eight-year-old who just scoffed a fiver's worth of Skittles, 'Cassius' is possibly the liveliest and most energetic single to be released from their upcoming album 'Antidotes' so far.
That doesn't mean it's the best, however. Stretched beyond its three and a half minutes, 'Cassius' would likely grate on its audience. Not exactly a feast of variety, it would benefit from having at least 40 seconds snipped off. Thrashing around in a slightly bloated runtime, the song still delivers lashings of carefully-plucked guitar and an unobtrusive layer of synth that jumps to life during the busiest moments. As ever, drummer Jack Bevan is the man who holds it all together; the Burberry model delivering chunky beats that give the rest of the band a sturdy backbone on which to flesh out their minimalist blips and bleeps.
The only thing that feels missing from the heady concoction is the gang vocals à la 'Balloons', but it's fair to say that Foals bring enough controlled chaos to the table without the five of them screaming like loonies.
