Glaswegian five-piece Attic Lights cite Teenage Fan Club, Guided By Voices, The Eels and the Beach Boys among their main influences and this simple indie power pop single adroitedly brings elements from these bands together.

It has the brain of an early Teenage Fan Club record, the heartbeat of an uptempo Eels, and the soul and harmonies of surf period Beach Boys. Singer Colin McArdle indeed taps into every prepubescent school boy's wet dream equivalent: "Get into a fight for you", and sings it straight up.

The lyrics do suitably evince a teenage naivety very much a la early Brian Wilson, except - which is a shame - for the song title refrain: the mention of 'never' implies a world-weariness and a self-analytical consciousness which somewhat undermines the song's charm and feel-good factor.

Similarly the musical shifts from verse to chorus to verse never quite possess the effortless grace, guile, wonder or wit expected of a great single. Still, there is much here to rouse the spirits: Jamie Huston's catch guitar hooks, Tim Davidson's pedal steel, and Kevin Sherry's deep with honeyed tones vocal combined with McArdle's distinctive high pitched twang.
