Forget Obama vs Hillary, the topic which should be on everyone's lips at the moment should be: will 2008 be the year that Blood Red Shoes capitalise on their 'next big thing' status and cross over to the mainstream? They were tipped for success by people who tip these sort of things at the beginning of 2006 and 2007 but have been held back by a lengthy quest to find the right record label. Five labels down the line, they finally seem to have settled down and are ready to release their debut album in April.
If all the tracks on the LP are as good as 'You Bring Me Down' then the future looks very bright for the Brighton based two piece, who lazy music journalists can't help but call the British White Stripes. Blood Red Shoes actually sound more like Sonic Youth, circa 'Dirty', rather than Detroitian duo, albeit a version of Sonic Youth where the marathon feedback sessions are replaced with hectic handclaps and hummable harmonies.
'You Bring Me Down' is three and a half minutes of angry pounding rock with enough pop nous to get played on the radio and enough energy to light a small Welsh town for a week. In their biography on their website the band say that "we're not in this for fame and fortune, we're in this because we just always wanted to be in a band" which is all very admirable, but if they continue to release singles of this quality then fame and fortune will surely be coming their way sooner rather than later.
