Joe Lean And The Jing Jang Jong popped up in 2007 with their debut single 'Lucio Starts Fires', and bagged themselves a couple of support slots with Babyshambles and Kaiser Chiefs towards the end of 2007.
No stranger to the dizzy heights of showbiz, frontman Joe Lean (just one of many stage names) was previously the drummer for The Pipettes and you may have spotted him in an episode of Peep Show. Now he and the band are looking forward to a stellar 2008 with the release of 'Lonely Buoy' this February, and a support slot with the mighty Cribs on the NME Awards Tour, kicking off at the end of January. Joe Lean And The Jing Jang Jong take five mins out of their current live dates to answer a few questions.
So, the band name - is it just so you can chuckle at DJs stumbling over it, or is there something deeper going on?
There's something a lot deeper going on.
Joe, why did you decide to break away from The Pipettes?
We formed this band as an exercise to have fun with. I never planned on leaving The Pipettes, but when it became clear that I could try something new I decided to go for it. The Pips were very excited for me too - there's no love lost there.
Why did you decide to sign to Young & Lost?
Because they were the first to offer us a single release.
You played a Little Noise acoustic session last year - how did that go?
It was fun. We really enjoyed the opportunity to play the softer side of our sound in the fine acoustic surroundings of a church.
You toured with Babyshambles, playing arena dates - how did it feel?
Playing that tour was fun. We really enjoyed the opportunity to play the harder side of our sound in the fine acoustic surroundings of an arena.
Joe, will you ever return to acting?
I don't know - at the moment there is no time.
You're known for your dapper dress sense - who are your style gurus?
Wurzel Gummage, Catweasel, and Beau Brummel.
Have you started work on your debut album yet?
We've finished the LP. It sounds like us, and we're happy with it.
Which of your songs sums you up as a band?
I think that it is the relationship between all of our songs which truly sums us up as a band.
