Unabashedly twee, Noah And The Whale sprinkle candy-flecks of tambourine and guitar-noodling over syrupy harmonium and a sweet, melting voice that sings about nothing but love. Meanwhile, violin stretches verge on melodrama before a collection of horns and a glockenspiel manage to rein in all the tenderness. Slight shifts of distortion and the occasional thump of percussion slices this dessert into delicate portions. Not too bad – if you have a massive sweet tooth.
B-side, 'Rocks & Daggers', is more of a hootenanny with a central rhythmic fiddler having an absurd amount of fun, eventually expiring into thoroughly enjoyable theatrics reminiscent of the most sensible of Final Fantasy's offerings. Faint laughter and applause sampled in creates a very inclusive sensation.
Noah And The Whale cozy up into an increasingly vacant niche; with the sheer weight of bands moving towards darker, noisier territories, it is nice to hear the ruminations of a tender-hearted act. To be included into the fun through aural tricks and gentleness is always a pleasure – despite the fact that dessert simply isn't dinner.
