Wearing glittery, star-shaped glasses and a curly wig and with tongue firmly in cheek, 'Christmas Number One' is a novelty song that pokes fun at all those hits of yuletides past that forever become synonymous with the seasonal period. Likening the enigma that is the Christmas chart topper to the creation of a snivelling, dribbling monster that refuses to die, this particular beast takes the form of a glam rock classic, a re-imagined 'I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day' written and performed by a supergroup containing members of Black Box Recorder and Art Brut - hence The Black Arts.
It's a humorous dig in the ribs to the music industry in general that, ironically, is catchy enough to become as popular as the art form it aims to rebuke. Sounding more like The Sweet than Wizzard, it chimes in all the right places, has a gang of toddlers joining in for the painfully memorable chorus and a stomping rhythm that would have even the most hardened party pooper performing the belt loop dance with aplomb. With Eddie Argos on backing vocals and a cheeky lyric at every turn there's plenty to smile about. In a right-minded world this goes straight in at number one for Christmas, and a new monster is born.
