The Black Ghosts are set to release their latest sinister take on love with new single 'Some Way Through This', out on 22nd October.
The macabre-obsessed electro duo consists of The Wiseguys' Theo Keating and Simon Lord from Simian. The pair have a few live dates lined up this Autumn, and their debut album is expected in 2008. Simon Lord tells us all about The Black Ghosts.
How did the two of you meet and come to form The Black Ghosts?
We met via the wonders of cyber-space and started exchanging and making music immediately, we didn't actually meet 'in person' until half the album was written.
How do you want people to feel listening to your music?
We want it to be like an emotional rollercoaster. There are all sorts of moods and atmospheres on the album, we're not a one trick pony, we're a thorough-bred race horse capable of a full range of emotion a bit like Mr. Ed... though it must be said that we don't shy away from the dark side.
Can you tell us about new single 'Some Way Through This'?
It's a bombastic modern torch song... deals with love in a passionate, psychotic way. A bit of psychosis always works a treat with the ladies, like that bloke in Blue Velvet. A constructive word for it is 'charisma'. Also make sure you check out the Skream vs Plastician remix, it's an excellent dub-step re-working of the track that has got us a place on the latest Rinse FM mix album, brrraaappp!
You both come from unusual backgrounds that have clearly shaped your music - can you imagine if your father hadn't created his own synthesisers?
As you say, I feel born into it so it's difficult to think of doing anything else. There have always been synthesizers, guitars and electronic gizmos knocking around. I have gone from using them as toys as a kid to making records with them, not that much difference really. Though if I wasn't doing music at all, I reckon I'd have gone for a career in exploring and survival like Bruce Parry and Bear Grylls.
The ingenious video for 'Some Way Through This' will ruin childhood memories of Lego - what were the Black Ghosts' childhood pastimes?
I was big into Lego as a kid, especially the space stuff, that's one of the reasons we wanted to do the Lego video. I grew up in the country so did the usual outdoor stuff. My secret skill would have to be archery - I am lethal with a bow and arrow.
Can you tell us about the Black Ghosts songwriting process?
We haven't yet made a track when we've been in the same room. One of us will come up with an idea and then email it to the other and then they'll add bits and send it back again... a bit like a musical version of chinese whispers.
What can fans expect from your live show?
We are doing a mutant DJ/Live show where we can play a mixture of our own and other people's records. We do live edits/effects and I can layer live vocals on top and everyone can dance and get drunk!
