This debut album by the electro-funk five-piece gets off to an inconspicuous start with 'Get Lucky'. It is a gentle introduction to the New Young Pony Club style before things really get going with 'Hiding On The Staircase'. Lead singer Tahita Bulmer growls her rallying call over a tribal beat, with memorable backing vocals from her bandmates. The lo-fi production emphasises Tahita's vocals, which have the honour of being not particularly great, but incredibly effective - which is what counts. Who cares if you can span five octaves if you have no passion - something NYPC's frontwoman has more than her fair share of.
In fact, the strength of this debut lies squarely with the charisma of this singer, who squeezes every last drop out of the songs, some of which fare better than others. The band's most well known track 'Ice Cream' is a perfect example, where the saucy lyrics are seductively executed over some effortless riffs and the kind of synth where you just know the player is a gorgeous, pouting creature. Things get even hotter with 'Jerk Me', where the electro beats place them amongst their peers, such as CSS, but most definitely not with flash-in-the-pan nu ravers. The similarities with the Brazilian band cannot be ignored, but while CSS have a playful innocence lurking underneath, NYPC are mature and bold as brass, and therefore far more convincing as the soundtrack to your wild nights out.
NYPC have an ear for a tune, as heard in the stupendously catchy 'The Bomb', and the gentler 'Grey', however, it is clear that things fall slightly flat when the band aren't being saucepots. Some of the songs just aren't that strong, and Tahita can sound bored rather than bold. The highlights of 'Fantastic Playroom' are the risque moments, as they are what the band are so good at. Just relish the moments, highlighted above, which are slices of pure disco brilliance from an extremely exciting band.
