Clickmusic Awards 2005: Best Band: Green Day
More on: Green Day

2005 has seen the entrance and resurgence of a great many bands in to the arena. Pixies headlined Reading and Leeds, Oasis played just about everywhere, and for the first time a band reached Number One solely through being talked about on the internet (Arctic Monkeys, if you've been hibernating since late Summer). We've seen Franz Ferdinand prove that they might just have an ounce of staying power, The Futureheads suprise everyone by covering a Kate Bush track successfully, and Kaiser Chiefs have the nation in the palm of their sweaty hand. Any one of these acts could have been Best Band; however just one was able to come back, prove themselves, surprise many and gain a whole new army of fans in the process. We give you Green Day.

2005 saw the Californian punk trio progess from cult status to international popstars. Admittedly they were already popular - 1994's 'Dookie' is a staple album in most alternative music fan's collection, and 'International Superhits', released in 2001 went platinum in the band's native America. They were by no means unknowns. Yet, with the release of their seventh studio album - the concept, and sometime rock opera 'American Idiot', Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool went stratospheric.

The success of lead single - also called 'American Idiot' - propelled the band in to the mainstream; everyone knew who Green Day were in 2005. 'Boulevard Of Broken Dreams' showed just how far the band had come since their three-chord-wonder early years, and 'Wake Me Up When September Ends' displayed a maturity and sensitivity most would have assumed the trio incapable of. The high point came, however, with the biggest shows the band had ever played - two nights at Milton Keynes Bowl in June: now immortalised on the 'Bullet In A Bible' live CD and DVD.

Overall, they deserve their award because they've excelled themselves in 2005; going beyond the remit of a power pop band to become international superstars, genuinely talented musicians, and embracing the meaning of true punk, in their role as de-facto political activists. Long live Green Day!
