We weren't quite sure what to expect when we picked up an album of covers with random famous friends covering seeming random songs. However, we were safe in the hands of Mark Ronson.
Giving a fresh, funk-vibe to many of our favourite modern classics, with the good ol' Ronson golden touch, 'Version' is jammed packed with blinders. 'Valerie', featuring everyone's favourite raspy-voiced female singer, Amy Winehouse, is a clear winner. It's as boppy and as catchy as the original, and Amy brings a brass accompaniment with her, transforming the overall sound into something that sounds far more mature.
Not convinced? Check out the cover of Britney Spears' 'Toxic' featuing Ol' Dirty Bastard and Tiggers. We could never imagine a big band backing Britters, but this version proves that it's a crying shame. Never has the word "irony" seemed more fitting.
“With Version I’ve taken these songs that I love and turned them into Motown/Stax 70’s versions. I keep the utmost respect and appreciation for the original versions of songs I use " came the official quote. The respect and appreciation can clearly be seen. Instead of murdering beautiful songs, he's given them a manicure and facial peel, with astounding results.
Maximo Park's 'Apply Some Pressure' could be criticised, being too close to the original with Paul Smith singing. That being said, there's really not a bad track on this album. Keep up the good work, Mark, we're loving your Version of things.
