Mark Ronson feat. Daniel Merriweather - Stop Me

With credits including some of the highlights on Robbie Williams' underrated effort, 'Rudebox' and Lily Allen's 'Alright, Still', 2006 saw Mark Ronson cement his reputation as one of Britain's most respected producers. It comes as a disappointment then that this mash-up of The Smiths' 'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before' and The Supremes' 'You Just Keep Me Hanging On' suffers slightly from over-production.

Noticeable is guest vocalist Merriweather's tendency to be overly sincere in his delivery, which sounds out of place on top of Morrissey's wryly-humorous lyrics. This problem of things not quite gelling together can be applied to most of the constituent parts of this record. Despite boasting sharp horns that were used to impressive effect on Amy Winehouse's 'Back To Black', and brooding Massive Attack-style strings, they tend to fight against each other for the listener's attention instead of blending into one tight eclectic whole.

This is a shame, because with a little less emphasis on throwing together a range of elements that have worked well for Ronson in the past and putting them all to the forefront (making it all seem somewhat contrived), 'Stop Me' could have worked extremely well.
