On first listening to this single, it's hard to understand quite exactly why The Shins' new material is getting so much attention, with their first US Number One album in the independent chart.

It's not going to change the world, and doesn't particularly 'rock', but after a few spins the magic starts to happen. Past the plodding bass line and the laid back guitar, the song opens up during the harmonies in the chorus. It's just a simple "ooooh aaaah" affair but it works a treat.

It's all very 1980s REM with a West Coast accent, and is sure to be played in many an independent film too. The only question left remaining is, what exactly is he singing about?
