The names of those lending their vocal talents to Jesse Malin's latest offering read like the dream guestlist of any music fanatic, ranging from Dave Grohl to Bruce Springsteen. Okay, so he's popular, but is he any good?

Well, yes he is. Despite the album not being quite as impressive as its contributing artists list, 'Glitter In The Gutter' is far from a poor effort - if not one that's possibly better suited for daddy dearest.

The New Yorker's themes range from the ever-present struggle for love and self worth to reflections on the daily grind of life in the city. There's probably at least one track on the album that would appeal to everyone. With its variation in style, unusual for albums of today, you can actually tell when one song ends and another begins - none of them sound the same. From the twinkling piano introduction of 'Bastards Of Young' to the abrasive riffing first notes of 'Prisoners Of Paradise', every track has something different to offer.

Malin's vocals aren't the strongest you'll hear all year, but when he makes pretty sounds and he sings nice words we don't mind . Album highlights include the opening track 'Don't Let Them Take You Down (Beautiful Day!)' and 'Black Haired Girl'.

If you're a big fan of traditional rock 'n' roll like Springsteen and The Replacements this is quite possibly your ideal album. For everyone else, on the other hand, it's good in small doses. Think Bon Jovi meets the Goo Goo Dolls and you wouldn't be far off.
