When most bands attempt to reinvent themselves, they do something drastic; go electro-goth, replace their drummer with a beeping box covered in flashing lights, start playing World bloody Music - you get the idea. Not Kaiser Chiefs though. After considering what headline grabbing departure should bookmark their comeback, they've really pushed the boat out by throwing away Peanut's hat. Blimey!
In between saving the world at Live 8 and playing darts on the telly (we kid you not - Square-eyed Ed), it appears that t'Chiefs have found time to pen a new album. This is the part where everyone starts talking about backlashes, difficult sophomore efforts and the chances of being able to top the commercial success of 'Employment'. They're all, on this evidence, very silly to start doing such things. 'Ruby', the band's comeback single, is nothing short of iconic.
There's no ripping up the Kaiser Chiefs rulebook, but rather a very posh reprint with a few extra chapters on the end. There's no need for the trademark "whooah" when you've got the guitar-line equivalent of SARS in the bag, after all. Taking all the elements that made them great, and putting them back together to make something even better, 'Ruby' might not be as immediate as 'I Predict A Riot' and co, but as growers come, it works bloody fast.
Proof indeed that Kaiser Chiefs are a proper band, and not some one album wonders, 'Ruby' is the sound of a band who've found another gear. If you think that's impressive, just wait until you hear what's still to come. Things won't be staying average for long.
