Already named as the BBC Sound's top new talent for 2007, MIKA is a name that you'll be hearing a lot this year. Born in Lebanon his family resolutely left during the war, finally residing in London via Paris. MIKA's sound is undoubtedly influenced from his culturally diverse upbringing and his eclectic musical taste encompassing everything from flamenco to pop to opera. In a narrow sense, 'Grace Kelly' can be defined as 'popera' (that’s 'pop-opera' – huh, did you see what I did there?).
'Grace Kelly', more broadly speaking, is colourful, opulent, grandiose pop at its best. It's a full-bodied track with an epic Queen-esque sound, even MIKA's voice being reminiscent of the late Freddie Mercury. Piano, guitars and clickety-click percussion are fused together to create a fresh and cheery tune. The high-pitched 'colour' section, "I could be brown, I could be blue, I could be violet sky…" is incredibly catchy and kitsch. It makes you feel like dancing around like a crazed loon - exceptionally happy, but nonetheless, a crazed loon.
Refreshingly different to anything out in the mainstream at the moment, 'Grace Kelly' is a fantastic song to brighten these grey, miserable winter days. A pure pop gem!
