The latest single to come from their 2006 hit debut album 'Not Accepted Anywhere', 'Raoul' is in fact a re-release, after reaching number 32 in the UK Singles Chart last March prior to the success of 'Monster'.
Lyrically it is mildly political, reinforcing our social mores where we meander along as lost ambitionless clones, slaves to work and products. Not quite sure how going to "see Raoul" can put an end to this. The band has hinted that he was just a guy who sold sandwiches on a stall opposite their Cardiff recording studio. Maybe I’m missing the point? Or is that the point?
Connotations aside, this is a fairly catchy, pleasant and inoffensive pop/rock ensemble from the guys. Their typical 'signature' sound (if I dare say it at such an early stage in their career) – a stomping-paced tune with Alex Pennie screaming backing vocals. The line "Let’s go see Raoul" is a definite head sticker; though this is partly due to the fact that it is vastly repeated throughout. Having a song stuck in your head can be highly enjoyable or highly annoying. Regrettably 'Raoul' fits into the latter.
'Raoul' in its own right is a ok track. It just lacks the charm or quirkiness of 'Monster'.
