What's the point of Placebo in 2006? Surely the novelty of hearing Brian Molko's evil pixie voice combined with loud guitars has worn off after ten years and five albums? The angst-ridden pop loving kids of Mexico and Chile may beg to differ, as the band's album 'Meds' album leapt to the top of the charts there. In the UK, however, the band's appeal is definitely becoming more selective, as the second single from the record, 'Infra-Red', only crawled to Number 42 in the charts.
It's unlikely that releasing the title track of the album as the follow-up is going to convince the youth of Britain that they need some Molko action in their lives. It all starts promisingly enough with the regulation Placebo tactic of having a quiet guitar bit which then promises to explode in to a multicoloured mess of naughty sex and fighting dwarves. Unfortunately that doesn't happen. The negotiations involved with getting Alison 'VV' Mosshart from The Kills to appear on the songs were obviously lengthy; they didn't have time to actually write a chorus for the track. Instead, Molko and Mosshart ask "Baby, did you forget to take your meds?", repeatedly in increasingly world-weary tones, until everyone involved gets bored and heads off in search of a single that doesn't sound like it's a reject from 'I Love 1996'.
