Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly is not, as it may sound, the tagline to the latest Superman movie, it is, in fact, Sam Duckworth, a poetic young man who has created an ingenious debut album, full of evocative and innovative songs. The album features Sam playing his acoustic guitar with accompaniment from his laptop for drumbeats and everything else needed to make a truly authentic compilation that you can really fall in love with.
'Chronicles Of A Bohemian Teenager' is full of intelligent, political thoughts and just gorgeous melodies; 'Once More With Feeling' is a total head-melter, and by the time you've relaxed from the gentle strumming and soft vocals, 'An Oak Tree''has jumped in, and this and other shining examples such as 'I-Spy' remind you this album can be both vibrant and relaxing.
But don't let the often serious lyrics let you forget this is still the handiwork of a 20 year old armed with brilliant ideas, and a heck of a knack for writing good tunes. As much as the idea of a superhero singer-songwriter would be a wonderful concept (and hey, as they go, he's probably quite close), it seems that Sam's just trying to positively highlight problems in the world and as the lyric "it's not naïve to think that you can change the things around" suggests he is trying to encourage action, not just words.
'Call Me Ishmael' is a superb single, and with the lyrics "You are not your job, and you are not the clothes you wear" you can create an every-day mantra to ease the 9 to 5, but as there are just so many good songs on this addictive album it's hard to find favourites, and it will appeal to more than just 'emo-folk' fans.
