Flight of the Conchords - I Told You I Was Freaky

You’ve probably heard the songs on the TV show to the point where you can replicate Jemaine’s stoic quips or Bret’s illustrious dancing in your sleep. It’s a bit like Father Ted’s ‘My Lovely Horse’; probably not just quite the same on the old stereo.

Flight of the Conchords - I Told You I Was Freaky

Flight of the Conchords' CDs are always a bit of an iffy prospect. You’ve probably heard the songs on the TV show to the point where you can replicate Jemaine’s stoic quips or Bret’s illustrious dancing in your sleep. It’s a bit like Father Ted’s ‘My Lovely Horse’; probably not just quite the same on the old stereo.

But that’s not to say second set I Told You I Was Freaky isn’t fun though. These are the very best cuts from the Conchords’ second series and consistently it shows why they’re regarded as one of the finer purveyors of musical comedy around today. Album opener ‘Hurt Feelings’ is an impressive splurge of lyrical bombast, revealing that yes, rappers have feelings too, whilst ‘Demon Woman’ enjoys some classic-rock drenched guitar lickery and twisted synths.

Some tracks here don’t quite fit in however; ‘Fashion Is Danger’ leaves your imagination desperately longing for the song’s visual accompaniment and despite a wholly intriguing title, ‘You Don’t Have To Be A Prostitute’ limps to a meek conclusion.

But as we reach the grand finale, ‘Angels’, it’s all about dreamy acoustic folk, which despite some comical vocal ascensions and phrasing somehow this dissolves into a genuinely listenable song. Amidst the schizophrenic melting pot of genres, comedy flourishes and New Zealand quirks there are the odd nuggets of songwriting genius here; at the least you’ll have a hell of a lot of fun finding them.
