Mastodon - Blood Mountain

Supposedly Mastodon are the future of heavy metal. Well, there is a rich history behind it, but this is ignored from the off, as 'The Wolf Is Loose' thunders in with crashing drums and gruff vocals over the kind of guitar sound that one can only fully protect themselves from by wearing a full set of riot gear. The guitars are literally cranked up to eleven, further pushed along by drumming of a speed and intensity that's very rarely matched.

As somewhat expected, the lyrics aren't exactly the most optimistic, phrases screamed regarding sleeping giants, blood, death, terror, yadda, yadda, yadda. After a while the songs do tend to grate, as there's little to distinguish between individual 'tunes'. All the electronic wizardry gets lost in the gigantic riffs.

However, you can't fault Mastodon for trying on the epic 'Pendulous Skin'. The song opens with a swirling guitar over vocals that sound like they've been recorded underwater, keyboards then peddling an almost melodic rock tune before it suddenly cuts off. A wait of roughly fifteen minutes and suddenly a planted fan claims he's ripped off Mastodon's demos before cackling the word 'real' in to the fade.

If this is 'keeping it real', we don't want to be around when Mastodon decide to step it up a notch.
