Film School - Hideout
The melancholy overtones of the album are captivating and you can feel overwhelmed by its intensity.
When listening to the first and subsequent tracks on Film School's second release, you can tell who they are heavily influenced by. My Bloody Valentine and a touch of Joy Division spring to mind, but that doesn't mean that they are unoriginal - they have taken the best facets from these groups and produced a fast-paced rock/electronic cross over. It is also unsurprising that they sound similar to My Bloody Valentine as Colm O'Ciosoig features on the album.
The nonchalant vocals, whirring guitars and pounding drums makes you remember a time when rock ruled. Every song on the album blends beautifully into the next, making sure that the mood is set perfectly for the next track. The melancholy overtones of the album are captivating and you can feel overwhelmed by its intensity.
However, 'Two Kinds' is clearly a rip-off of The Cure and they unashamedly mimic every element that made them so unique, which is a shame as the rest of the album is quite genius. Another track 'Florida' comes across boring, dingy and tedious to listen to.
These days the music scene is more buoyant and doesn't take itself seriously, this record is a breath of fresh air, as 'Hideout' suits the mood of how punk used to be - gloomy and perpetually dark.
